If the employer drug coverage was at least as good as the standard Medicare benefit ("creditable coverage"), the individual can avoid paying any late-enrollment penalties by enrolling in a plan within 63 days of being discontinued.
If the employer coverage ends on December 31, the individual can also enroll anytime during the Medicare Annual Election Period (November 15 through December 31) for coverage that begins on January 1.
